There's quite a lot of moving parts to a nomadic life. As "micro-renters" we have to stay on top of lots of different things like where we will live for the next month or week as it were.

We have to keep track of how many days we have remaining on our visas, or risk having to pay a fine or worse...being banned from a country.

We're constantly planning our movements, looking for the best airfare, train, or bus deals.

If you're considering this lifestyle, the above might not have crossed your mind, but it is the reality of life as a digital nomad.

On the other hand, I'll bet there's one thing you do think about, and that is, "Who will take care of my mail while I'm abroad?"

Yes, the reality is even if you've left the good ol' US of A as we have, and even with the advent of email, there are some things that will still require a mailing address.

Like what, you ask? Well, how about:

  • Bank statements(credit cards, checking/savings accounts)
  • Any physical checks(reimbursements, unemployment, rebates)
  • Physical cards(memberships, credit cards, driver's license)

There are probably other types of mail you would want to receive that are unique to your situation, but you get the picture.

If you have someone trustworthy you can enlist their aid and have all your mail forwarded to them while you're out.

What we do is use a mail handling service to be the first point of entry for all our mail, and then enlist someone's help if we absolutely need them to physically handle our mail.

Enter Virtual Post Mail. (VPM)

More than a mail forwarder, VPM is practically a one-stop shop for handling your mail while you're away.

Every piece that comes in gets scanned without being opened. Then you receive an email informing you that you have new mail that has been scanned.

Login to the VPM interface, and you're presented cover scans of all mail that was received.

From this screen, you can choose to direct VPM to:

  • Open the mail and scan its contents
  • Trash the mail and keep the scanned image(or delete the image as well)
  • Move the mail to "To be shipped" status

If you elect to have the mail scanned, you will receive another email informing you that the opened mail has been scanned and is available for viewing.

Login to the VPM interface, and you can view individual pages from each scanned piece.

From this screen you can choose to:

  • Trash  the mail and keep the scanned images(or delete the images as well)
  • Move the mail to "To be shipped" status
  • Download a PDF of the images to your computer

Should you elect to ship your mail to another address(for example to a friend or relative), it is sent via USPS First Class or USPS Priority Mail.

Other services offered include:

  • Receiving and handling packages(Amazon, Ebay, etc.)
  • Check deposit
  • International forwarding of your mail

Virtual Post Mail offers different pricing plans depending on how heavy your mail load is and whether you heavily utilize the scanning option.

The fees are very reasonable, and we've gotten a great value out of the service.

So far, we have been more than satisfied with Virtual Post Mail. And we'll be continuing with the service for the foreseeable future.

So there you have it, your mail handling won't be a problem while you go out there and conquer the world!
